RM COCO is proud to offer a wide array of contract-grade drapery and upholstery fabrics. Fabrics passing NFPA 701 for drapery fabrics and NFPA 260 for upholstery applications are the most desired in these settings. Additional factors may also determine which fabrics are best suited for specific interior/exterior room settings. These may include abrasion ratings and cleanability factors in addition to FR ratings that may be required. Many contract-grade fabrics may also be excellent choices for residential design settings.
Hospitality venues such as restaurants, cafes, hotels, and bars, may have more varied requirements than ordinary spaces. As atmospheric spaces that serve food and drinks, it can be tricky to source the perfect upholstery or drapery fabrics for hospitality venues.
A primary consideration for selecting fabrics for hospitality venues is; will this fabric be easy to manage. Will it be cleaned with little fuss? While this may be a key consideration, many additional factors must be determined when designing hospitality venues. Is the fabric selected durable enough for daily use? Will the fabric deteriorate over time and negatively impact the setting? Is the fabric safe to use in a hospitality setting – for example, are they flame-retardant and anti-microbial? The list goes on.
Multiple factors must be taken into account when specifying fabrics for contract environments. This can be a bit tricky when various contract sectors often have different requirements and regulations.
Not all FR tests for fabrics are the same! Identifying the specific application and environment where fabrics are to be used will help determine which FR testing fabrics will need to pass.
Both Wyzenbeek and Martindale are abrasion, or rub tests. They are, however, different tests with different test properties. Success in one test does not infer success in the other. Wyzenbeek involves rubbing along the warp and weft of the fabric whereas Martindale is a figure-8 rub.
Another consideration for fabric selection is what light control a fabric needs to offer depending on the environment it is going into – for sleep, to create ambiance, or provide privacy. If the end-use is for a hotel bedroom, blackout or dimout fabrics may be ideal to assure visitors don’t have disrupted sleep. On the other hand, sheers or voiles offer little light protection but are great for privacy or acting as room dividers where necessary.
The use of fabric in space is a highly effective way to control or enhance the acoustics in the setting by controlling noise reverberation. They can create ambiance acoustically, as well as visually.
Sustainable, ethical, ecological – all these factors are becoming increasingly important when selecting a fabric. Some to look out for include:
European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals.
Worldwide association of independent institutes for product safety and sustainable production in the textile industry. If a textile article carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be certain that every component of this article has been tested for harmful substances and that the article, therefore, is harmless in human ecological terms – this is applicable to all processing steps from yarn to finished product.
Phthalates are chemical compounds used in a multitude of products that demand high performance, long-lasting wear, and durability.
PERFORMANCE FABRICS
Today we see a variety of performance fabrics. Some are for outdoor use, some for indoor, and some perform in both outdoor and indoor spaces. RM COCO offers the following types of performance fabrics in its line.
Flame Retardant Drapery
Fabrics used in most public spaces are required by law in many states and cities to be certified as flame retardant, according to standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association. In the case of draperies, curtains, and similar hanging textiles, the standard that applies is NFPA 701: Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films. This test measures the flammability of a fabric when it is exposed to specific sources of ignition.
Flame Retardant Upholstery
NFPA 260 measures the ability of upholstery fabric to resist ignition by a smoldering cigarette when the specimen is tested in combination with polyurethane foam cushioning.

High Abrasion Fabrics
The Wyzenbeek and Martindale tests are the two methods commonly used to predict durability. Actual performance is determined by many factors such as fiber content, weaves, finishes, furniture design, maintenance, cleaning, and usage. Durability of an upholstery fabric is a complex combination of a number of performance tests that, in addition to abrasion, includes seam slippage, piling, tensile strength, and usage.
Sunbrella®
Sunbrella® fabrics are woven to provide years of great memories, whether indoors, outdoors, or on the water. These fabrics oven from 100% solution-dyed acrylic yarns, Sunbrella® fabrics offer superior lightfastness. Most stains are cleanable using soap and water. Tougher stains may require cleaning with a water and bleach solution.
